Retail Company

Timberland® is a global leader in the design, engineering, and marketing of premium-quality footwear, apparel and accessories. Timberland products are sold worldwide through Timberland own retail and outlet stores, as well as in major department stores and specialty retail locations. Consolidated revenue in 2007 totaled $442 million. Timberland first deployed CyberFusion Integration Suite™ (CFI) to integrate all global file transfers across its various platforms, which included AS/400 and Windows. Seeing the success of the global deployment, Timberland then selected Proginet to be its trusted partner to deliver solutions for Internet file transfer. This is achieved through CFI Internet Server, a core integrated component of CFI. “It was an easy decision for us, given the success we had with Proginet’s midrange suite of products,” says Paul Deguise, Senior Manager for Technical Services at Timberland.

Using CFI, Timberland connects worldwide operations via VPN (virtual private network) in a Windows NT network. Timberland rolled out a solution that has exceeded all expectations. One of the biggest benefits of implementing CFI was the improvement the company saw in performance over their previous solution. “CFI has really helped us improve the timely reporting of consolidated financial information as well as other operational data,” says Bart Gundersen, Senior System Software Engineer at Timberland. “We have added extensive automation to the process as well, using the native features of CFI. We needed to make our automation process as seamless and secure as possible and Proginet certainly met those needs. Besides improving overall efficiencies, this automation, and some pretty amazing compression ratios we’re realizing with the product, have enabled us to reduce our transfer times from 30 minutes to a matter of seconds.
Timberland is now able to leverage this success with CFI to solve other file transfer challenges throughout its business worldwide. “The CFI configuration is easily repeatable, so deployment in other areas of our business is simple and intuitive,” adds Gundersen.

Challenges:

  • Single solution for all internal and external file transfer needs.
  • Sensitive data moving over the Internet (full encryption required).
  • Extensive scheduling and automation needed for high volumes of daily global transfers.
  • Speed and reliability needed in one integrated solution.

CFI Solution:

  • Timberland has been able to standardize on a single solution for all global file transfers. Initially, CFI Platform Server was deployed for internal transfers across platforms. The success of the deployment led to Timberland’s selection of Internet Server for Internet file transfers and for partner integration.
  • CFI’s scheduling, post-processing actions, and guaranteed delivery mechanisms enable 24x7 automation across the entire global organization.
  • CFI integrates with a variety of scheduling tools including Control M.
  • Timberland utilizes CFI’s smart compression which is included as standard in the core CFI solution. This means that all file transfers are compressed at no additional cost.
  • Through a combination of automation and the compression ratios of CFI, Timberland have been able to reduce its file transfer times from 30 minutes to a matter of seconds.
Timberland can use CFI to facilitate seamless communications across its entire global operation.
